Manuel Martín: web development to improve lives

Manuel Martin is a software developer working on the Support-HF project for patients with heart failure. 

How long have you been working at The George Institute?

I started in January 2016, six months ago.

What attracted you to working at The George Institute?

For me it is thrilling, because The George Institute is an international organisation with bases in other continents, dedicated to improving global health, I can be part of it and I would like to contribute towards its achievements.

What are you currently working on?

I am responsible for developing or improving the back-end in Support-HF project, collecting patients’ details and providing diagnosis with the aim of improving their lives.

What is a recent highlight?

The first application in which I have been working focused on the health and improving the health of people, for me it is a big highlight.

What difference will this make to healthcare and why?

We enable a faster and more personalised monitoring of patients with heart failure, which leads to improved patient care.

What is your professional background?

I have worked in the field of web development for seven years in several companies in Seville for public administration, in the areas of electricity, healthcare, education etc. Above all my experience was focused in web maps development like Google Maps to improve every type of web management. I have worked with different programme languages and frameworks, which kept me interested in updating my knowledge.

Why do you enjoy working at The George Institute?

Because I enjoy web development and the fact that I can help to improve the lives of people with it. This is a wonderful thing for me.

To explain to people what I do I say

I implement a web application to help patients with cardiovascular diseases monitor and control their health.

I work at The George Institute because

I think I can improve people’s lives while doing what I enjoy the most.

To unwind at the end of the day I

Take the train every day to go home and once at home, I like to watch cinema.

My first job was

As a junior developer in Guadatel, Spain. There I had a very good work experience, and I enjoyed good work environment.

My biggest achievement so far

Is the fact that I am able to contribute to improving people’s lives with the technology we provide them.
