Dr Cheryl Carcel is a Heart Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow and Paul Kroner Innovation Award recipient and, in 2022, she will commence an NHMRC Emerging Leader Fellowship (EL1). She is a neurologist and a senior research fellow at The George Institute where she is the academic lead of the Global Brain Health Initiative and lead of the Sex Differences in Stroke group. She is a Stroke Society of Australasia Emerging Stroke Clinician and Scientist. As a World Heart Federation Emerging Leader in Stroke, Dr Carcel leads a trial evaluating essential acute stroke care in low-resource settings in Nigeria and Peru.

Her research focuses on sex and gender differences, women’s brain health, stroke trials, cognition and policies encouraging disaggregation of data by sex.
